Karina Gibert (Ph.D.) (karina.gibert@upc.edu, http://www.eio.upc.edu/en/homepages/karina, ORCID id: 0000-0002-8542-3509) is a Full Professor at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech (UPC) since 2018, and has been teaching at UPC since 1990. Bachelor in Informatics Engineering (1990) with specialities in computational statistics and Artificial Intelligence. Ph.D. in Computer Science (UPC, 1995). Postgraduate in Higher Eductation Teaching (UPC, 1996). Member of the governmental working team Catalonia.AI (from oct 2018, Generalitat de Catalunya) and co-writter of the Catalan Strategic Plan for AI of the Catalan government (enacting from Frebruary 2018, 28th).

Teaching profile: She leads courses related with Statistics, Multivariate Analysis, Data Science, Intelligent Decision Support Systems in several degrees and master studies on Computer Science, AI, Statistics, Industry 4.0, Digital Transformation, Sustainability or eHealth both at UPC and other universities and is member of 3 PhD programms at UPC. Interested in innovation for teaching. Member of the Professional Skills commission of the Barcelona School of Informatics (june 2016-); eHealth Eurocampus european project (1000224-EURCOM-EC) for training of ICT in eHealth. Edinsost (EDU2015-65574-R) for training of sustainability in higher education.
Awards: donaTIC 2018 Award in the academic/researcher category (Generalitat de Catalunya, dec 2018). First HackingBullipedia contest Award (nov 2013), related with the famous chef Ferran Adrià, with the project GENESIS: Intelligent decision support for creativity through evolutive analysis, vimeo.com/78143348. “Highly accessed paper” distinction to HARPS 8(28)1:16. EU-best e-Health European project Award to K4Care projec t(feb 2010) for the high quality standards achieved. Elected Fellow from iEMSs (jul 2007).
Scientific and Technology Transfer activity: Her scientific production has continuously been recognized as excellent by the Spanish Governement from 1990, (44 SCI-papers, more than 450 publications, 19 in QI, H-index 26). She has edited 5 JCR special issues related with Data Science and AI. She advised 6 PhD thesis (one of them received the Chihuahua Technology award in 2003, México), 52 Final Degree Thesis and 22 Master Thesis, some of them to movility students (India or Italy). Some in cooperation with industry (BDigital, Mango, Accenture, Hewlet-Packard, Siemens...). She leaded research and technology transfer with many institutions (IP of 30 technology transfer contracts with 28 entities of productive sector). Researcher from 42 competitive projects, with a total budget of more than 10M euros; from them, 15 were European Projects. To mention AI4EU (H2020-ICT-2018-2-RIA-825619) for an European platform on AI (jan 2019), K4Care, (IST-2004-026968); Diet4You project (TIN2014-60557-R, to assess on personalized diets for healthy life-styles and taking into account health, life styles and gene-expressions); GAVIUS (UIA04-095) for digital transformation of public administration (set 2019-). Currently IP of project INSESS-COVID19 project (CCD-COVID-L019) to discover new social vulnerabilities produced by COVID19 crisis. Her expertise is related with the extraction of valuable decisional knowledge from data using data science and artificial intelligence techniques and to bridge the gap between data-driven methods and decision-making processes, including formal management of specific domain knowledge, topics very aligned with emergent field of explainable AI. IP of the software development of KLASS (1989-) and KET (2017- ) systems. She has long experience on health and wellness domains (consultant of the Mental Health Department of the WHO feb 2008- ag 2010), environmental systems and sustainability and digital transformation among others, always under an ethical approach. Essential characteristics of her research are the multidisciplinariety, the externalization, the internationalization and technology transfer to society. She is also involved in promoting the interest of girls for Computer science, Artificial Intelligence and Statistics from 2017.
Societies and working groups: She is pioneer member of COEINF (1991-, member 345), ACIA (1995- ), iEMSs (int’l Environmental Modelling and Software society, 2002-), MIDAS (Spanish funded Network on Data Mining and Learning, 2002-), AMyC (interest group in Multivariate Analysis and Classification, a chapter of Spanish Society of Statistics and Operations Research, 2006- ), SoCE (Catalan Statistical Society, 2010- ), ATICA (spanish network for Computational Intelligence, 2014- ), Knowledge Engineering and Machine Learning (KEMLg, 1986), now part of IDEAI and head of the group in 2013-2016. Member of PSICOST Association, past member of Catalan Society for Mathematics (1995-2005), EUSFLAT (European Society for Fuzzy Logic 1994-2000) and she works to disseminate Data Science, Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining techniques to Spanish and international community and to application fields like, environment, health or e-comerce. Chair of the CCIA2018 congress and DMTES workshop and session series inside iEMSs conference (2002- ). Chair of the Women in Technological professionals Workshop, Barcelona, des 2019. Co-chair of the event Women in Tech: Professional inclusion, Barcelona, feb 25,2019. She is also involved in promoting the role of women in Computer science and STEAM from 2017.

- Novembre, 27th 2013: A team leaded by Karina Gibert wins the international contest The HackingBullipedia Global Challenge, organized by El Bulli Foundation and Telefonica and calling for talent and innovative ideas to contribute to the Bullipedia project. The team, composed by Karina Gibert, Javier Vázquez-Salceda, Sergio Álvarez-Napagao, Luis Oliva-Felipe, Beatriz Sevilla-Villanueva, Arturo Tejeda and Ignasi Gómez-Sebastià from the KEMLg research group at UPC defended the proposal entitled GENESIS: Intelligent Decision Support for Creativity through Evolutive Analysis (see the video and find details about the contest in Hackingbullipedia), which passed as a finalist of the contest on November the 7th 2013.
